A Totem Animal is an animal's spirit, your spirit is connected to. Your Totem Animal(s), won't neccessarily be your favourite animal, though. Or live in the area you do. To discover your Totem Animal, pay attention to your dreams, signs the universe may be sending, pictures of animals that keep occuring, visions, daydreams, and other sources. Don't rely on other people to tell you. The important thing to do is just ask your Self, 'What are my Totem Animals? What animal(s) does my Self relate to?' Not your identity, but truly your Self.
I have heard of people having three Totem Aniamls, but that may not be true for everyone. As you know, tutrles are one of mine. One other is The Crow. I have yet to discover my third (if I have a third Totem Animal).
Also your Totem Animal(s) may change. Not for all people, though. It depends on if you have something to learn from that particular animal, inwhich case after the insight has been revealed, the animal's spirit may move-on, or if you have a soul connection with the animal, then they may stay.
There are many books solely on this subject. Also websites can be easy to find. Just make sure your sources are consistant with each other. Truly though, follow your own Intuition, more than any other resource, even everything I just apprised now;what may be true for one may not be true for another.
